Trauma Recovery/HAP Is Turning 30!

Join us as we celebrate our visionary founder, rich history and continuous efforts to use EDMR therapy to bring hope and healing to communities impacted by trauma across the globe.

The Shapiro Effect

Dr. Francine Shapiro developed Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy to treat those suffering from trauma. Her revolutionary work and founding of Trauma Recovery/HAP created a momentous ripple effect. Today, her profound influence is still felt, as our trained clinicians can provide more and more life-changing EMDR services to communities reeling from manmade or natural disasters.

Overcoming Trauma Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow — By the Numbers

Dr. Shapiro’s passion resonates within the fabric of our organization and continues to be a source of motivation and inspiration. We’re incredibly proud of her enduring legacy and our far-reaching impact.

  • 1

One visionary woman developed EMDR in the late 80s as a treatment for those grappling with emotional and physical trauma: Dr. Francine Shapiro.

  • 100

In the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, approximately 100 volunteer clinicians provided EMDR treatment to victims and first responders.

  • 1995

Due to the overwhelmingly positive impact of these treatments in Oklahoma City, the non-profit organization EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Programs was founded in 1995.

  • 92.7%

In 1999, trained clinicians in Turkey treated earthquake victims and demonstrated that 92.7% of those with PTSD lost the diagnosis after an average of five EMDR sessions.

  • 9/11

The need for quick and effective mobilization of mental health services post-9/11 prompted the creation of our first Trauma Recovery Network®.

  • 16,000

100 clinicians in India trained by Trauma Recovery/HAP were able to provide treatment to over 16,000 survivors of the Gujarat earthquake in 2001.

  • 567%

Between 2010 and 2014, the number of Trauma Recovery Network® chapters grew from 3 to 20, a staggering increase of 567%.

  • 2013

We added “Trauma Recovery” to our name to make the organization’s focus more immediately apparent to the general public.

  • 30+

Trauma Recovery/HAP has continued to expand its outreach and has coordinated responses to natural or manmade disasters in over 30 countries.

  • 1,400

Approximately 1,400 EMDR therapists across 68 worldwide Trauma Recovery Networks® are able to effectively respond to trauma in their local communities.

  • 70+

Our faculty volunteers provide more than 70 EMDR training events to non-profit or mental health agency employees each year.

  • $3MM+

To date, we’ve been able to offer $3,254,846 in discounts to increase access to our EMDR training programs.

  • 42,700

Since 2004, we’ve trained approximately 42,700 individuals in our programs, which are the only trainings by a non-profit based entirely on the EMDR manual and research of Dr. Shapiro.

    In the Spotlight

Throughout the year, we’ll spotlight the people, programs and services that illuminate who we are, how we got here and what lies ahead.

      JANUARY

      Origins of Trauma Recovery/HAP

In the devastating aftermath of the Oklahoma City Bombing in 1995, an FBI agent who had previously received EMDR therapy requested assistance, stating that the local mental health professionals were overwhelmed. Approximately 100 volunteer clinicians trained in EMDR rose to the occasion and provided pro bono treatment for bombing victims and front-line responders. Over 80% of these therapy recipients experienced significant benefits within three sessions. The feedback was so encouraging that EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Programs (HAP) was formed.

    • FEBRUARY

      Trauma Recovery Network®

We formed our Trauma Recovery Network® (TRN®) to assist in times of emergency with pro bono EMDR services. Staffed entirely by trained volunteers, these local/regional member groups serve affected communities through a comprehensive program of preparation, mitigation, rescue and response. They engage local emergency management systems and the general public to restore and safeguard psychological well-being. There are 68 associations worldwide, including our Orange County TRN® and Los Angeles County TRN®, which are leading coordinated responses to the fires in Southern California.

      Voices of Hope

Thousands of individuals have played an instrumental role in the success and growth of Trauma Recovery/HAP. Watch below as a few of them share their personal journeys. Check back often as we’ll continue to add more throughout the year.
